Hadith #12382 - Majma al-Zawaid - The Compilation of Extra Narrations and the Source of Benefits

١٢٣٨٢ - وَعَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ حُدَيْجٍ قَالَ: كُنْتُ عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ حِينَ جَاءَهُ كِتَابٌ مِنْ عَامِلِهِ يُخْبِرُهُ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ بِالتُّرْكِ وَهَزَمَهُمْ وَكَثْرَةَ مَنْ قُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ وَكَثْرَةَ مَنْ غَنِمَ، فَغَضِبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ إِلَيْهِ: قَدْ فَهِمْتُ مِمَّا قُلْتَ مَا قَتَلْتَ وَغَنِمْتَ، فَلَا أَعْلَمَنَّ مَا عُدْتَ لِشَيْءٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَلَا قَاتَلْتَهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكَ أَمْرِي. قُلْتُ لَهُ: لِمَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - ﷺ - يَقُولُ: " «لَتَظْهَرَنَّ التُّرْكُ عَلَى الْعَرَبِ حَتَّى تُلْحِقَهَا بِمَنَابِتِ الشِّيحِ وَالْقَيْصُومِ» ". فَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ
قِتَالَهُمْ لِذَلِكَ.
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى، وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ.

#12382 12382 - And on the authority of Mu'awiyah bin Hudayj, who said: I was in the presence of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan when a letter arrived from his governor informing him that he had engaged the Turks and defeated them, mentioning the large number of those killed and the abundance of the spoils of war. Mu'awiyah became angry at that, then he ordered that it be written to him: "I have understood what you stated regarding those you killed and the spoils you took. Let me not know of you returning to any such thing, nor shall you fight them until my command reaches you." I said to him: "Why, O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: "The Turks shall surely prevail over the Arabs until they drive them back to the regions where the wormwood and the southernwood grow." He [Mu'awiyah] said: "Therefore, I dislike fighting them for that reason."
