#13883 13883 - On the authority of Salamah bin Salamah bin Waqsh—who was among the companions of Badr—he said: We had a neighbor from among the Jews in the tribe of Banu Abd al-Ashhal. [He said: One day, shortly before the mission of the Prophet (pbuh) began, he came out to us and stood before the gathering of the Banu Abd al-Ashhal]. Salamah said: At that time, I was the youngest person present, wearing a cloak and lying down in it in the courtyard of my family's home. He mentioned the Resurrection, the Day of Judgment, the Reckoning, the Balance, Paradise, and the Fire. He said this to a people who were polytheistic idolaters and did not believe that a resurrection would occur after death. They said to him: "Woe to you, O so-and-so! Do you truly believe this will happen—that people will be resurrected after their death to an abode containing a Paradise and a Fire, where they will be recompensed for their deeds?" He said: "Yes, by the One who is sworn by! He would wish that in exchange for his share of that Fire, he could have the largest oven in the house heated up, and then he be placed inside it and it be sealed shut over him, if it meant he would be saved from that Fire tomorrow." They asked: "Woe to you! And what is the sign of that?" He replied: "A Prophet who shall be sent from the direction of these lands," and he pointed with his hand toward Mecca and Yemen. They asked: "And when shall we see him?" He looked at me, as I was the youngest of them, and said: "If this boy lives out his lifespan, he shall live to see him." Salamah said: By Allah, days and nights did not pass until Allah the Almighty sent His Prophet (pbuh) while he [the neighbor] was still alive among us. So we believed in him, but he disbelieved in him out of transgression and envy. We said to him: "Woe to you, O so-and-so! Did you not tell us what you told us about him?" He replied: "Yes, but he is not the one."
