#820 Yazid bin Harun informed us, Ibn 'Awn informed us, from Muhammad, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) led one of the two afternoon prayers, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation and stood by a piece of wood placed across the mosque and placed his hand upon it. Yazid said: Ibn 'Awn showed us, and he placed one of his palms on the back of the other and interlaced his upper fingers into the lower ones while placing them, and he stood as if he were angry. He said: The hasty ones among the people departed, and they began saying: "The prayer has been shortened, the prayer has been shortened." Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, but they did not speak. Among the people was a man with long arms called Dhu al-Yadayn, who said: "O Messenger of Allah, have you forgotten the prayer, or has it been shortened?" He replied: "I did not forget, nor has it been shortened." He said: "Is it so?" They said: "Yes." He said: So he returned and completed what remained, then gave the salutation, then said 'Allahu Akbar' and prostrated for a long duration, then raised his head, then said 'Allahu Akbar' and prostrated as he had prostrated, then raised his head and finished.
