#1581 Hajjaj bin Minhal informed us, Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talha, from Abu al-Mundhir, the freed slave of Abu Dharr, from Abu Umayyah al-Makhzumi, that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was brought a thief who had made a confession, though no property was found with him. He (pbuh) said: "I do not think you have stolen." The man said: "Indeed, I did." He (pbuh) said: "I do not think you have stolen." The man said: "Indeed, I did." He (pbuh) then said: "Go and cut off his hand, then bring him to me." So they cut off his hand and brought him back to him. He (pbuh) then said: "Seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him." The man said: "I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to Him." He (pbuh) then said: "O Allah, accept his repentance; O Allah, accept his repentance."
