#2062 Al-Hakam ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Muslim informed us, on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir, who said: Zurayq ibn Hayyan, the freed slave of Banu Fazara, informed me that he heard Muslim ibn Qarazah al-Ashja'i say: I heard 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: "The best of your leaders are those whom you love and who love you, and for whom you pray and who pray for you; and the worst of your leaders are those whom you hate and who hate you, and whom you curse and who curse you." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, should we not then challenge them at that point?" He said: "No, as long as they establish the prayer among you. Behold, whoever has a ruler appointed over him and sees him committing something of disobedience to Allah, let him hate that act of disobedience to Allah, but let him not withdraw a hand from obedience."
