أَخْبَرَنا مالكٌ، أَخْبَرَنا أَبُو سُهَيْلِ بْنِ مالكٍ، وَأَبُو النَّضْرِ مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ مالكِ بْنِ أَبِي عامِرٍ الأَنْصارِيِّ، أَنَّ عُثْمانَ بْنَ عَفّانَ، كانَ يَقُولُ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ: «إِذَا قامَتِ الصَّلاةِ، فاعْدِلُوا الصُّفُوفَ، وَحاذُوا بِالْمَناكِبِ، فَإِنَّ اعْتِدالِ الصُّفُوفِ مِنْ تَمامِ الصَّلاةِ»، ثُمَّ لا يُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ رِجالٌ قَدْ وَكَّلَهُمْ بِتَسْوِيَةِ الصُّفُوفِ، فَيُخْبِرُونَهُ أَنَّ قَدِ اسْتَوَتْ فَيُكَبِّرُ. ٥٧

Malik informed us: Abu Suhayl ibn Malik and Abu al-Nadr, the freed slave of ‘Umar ibn ‘Ubayd Allah, informed us, on the authority of Malik ibn Abi ‘Amir al-Ansari, that ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan used to say in his sermon: "When the prayer commences, straighten the rows and align the shoulders, for indeed the straightening of the rows is part of the perfection of prayer." Then he would not recite the Takbir until men he had appointed to straighten the rows came to him and informed him that they were indeed straightened, at which point he would recite the Takbir. 57
