#1083 1083 - Ibn Sanjar narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, al-'Attaf ibn Khalid al-Makhzumi narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Rafi', from Anas ibn Malik, who said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) in the mosque of Mina, and there came to him a man from the Ansar and a man from Thaqif. They both greeted him with peace and offered a beautiful supplication for him, then they said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have come to ask you." He said: "If you both wish, I can inform you of what you have come to ask me about, and I shall do so; and if you both wish, I shall remain silent and you may ask me, and I shall do so." They said: "Inform us, O Messenger of Allah, so that we may increase in faith or certainty" — the doubt is from Isma'il, who said: "I do not know which of the two he said: faith or certainty?" Then the Ansari said to the Thaqafi: "Ask the Messenger of Allah (pbuh)," but the Thaqafi said: "Rather, you ask him, for I recognize your right." So he asked him, and he (the Prophet) said: "You came to me to ask about your departure from your house heading toward the Sacred House and what is in it for you; about your circumambulation (Tawaf) around the House and what is in it for you; about your two units of prayer (Rak'atayn) after the circumambulation and what is in them for you; about your circumambulation (Sa'i) between al-Safa and al-Marwa and what is in it for you; about your standing on the afternoon of 'Arafah and what is in it for you; and about your circumambulation around the House after that," meaning the Tawaf al-Ifadah. He (the man) said: "By He Who sent you with the truth, I have come to ask you about this." He (the Prophet) said: "Indeed, when you depart from your house heading toward the Sacred House, your camel does not put down its hoof nor lift it except that Allah writes for you a good deed thereby, removes from you a sin thereby, and raises you a degree. As for your two units of prayer after the circumambulation, they are like freeing a slave from the descendants of Isma'il. As for your circumambulation between al-Safa and al-Marwa after that, it is like freeing seventy slaves. As for your standing on the afternoon of 'Arafah, Allah—Exalted and Glorified be He—descends to the lowest heaven and prides Himself on you before the angels, saying: 'These are My servants; they have come disheveled, intercessors from every deep mountain pass, hoping for My mercy and My forgiveness. Even if your sins were as numerous as the grains of sand, the drops of rain, or the foam of the sea, I would forgive them. Depart, My servants, forgiven, you and those for whom you intercede.' As for your stoning of the pillars (Jimar), for every pebble you throw, there is an expiation for a major, destructive, and obligatory sin. As for your sacrifice, it is stored for you with your Lord. As for the shaving of your head, for every hair you shave, you have a good deed and a sin is erased from you thereby." He (the man) asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what if the sins are less than that?" He replied: "Then it is stored for you in your good deeds. As for your circumambulation around the House after that—meaning the Ifadah—you circumambulate while having no sin. An angel comes and places his hand between your shoulders, then says: 'Work for what lies ahead, for your past has been forgiven.'" The Thaqafi said: "Then inform me, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You came to ask me about prayer." He said: "By He Who sent you with the truth, I have come to ask you about it." He (the Prophet) said: "When you stand for prayer, perform the ablution (Wudu) thoroughly; for indeed, when you rinse your mouth, the sins fall from"
