#2493 Al-Hasan ibn al-Sabbah and Muhammad ibn Rizq Allah narrated to us, they said: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, on the authority of Usama ibn Zayd, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "Would you like me to tell you about the beginning of my [conversion to] Islam?" He said: We said: "Yes." He said: "I was the harshest of people against the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). While I was out on a very hot day in one of the streets of Mecca, a man from Quraysh saw me and said: 'Where are you going, O son of al-Khattab?' I said: 'I seek this man [the Prophet].' He said: 'O son of al-Khattab, this matter [Islam] has already entered your own household, and yet you say this?' I asked: 'What is that?' He said: 'Your sister has followed him.' Umar said: 'I returned in a state of anger until I knocked on her door.' Whenever someone destitute embraced Islam, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) would join one or two men to another man who would provide for them. Umar said: 'He had joined two men from his companions with my sister's husband. I knocked on the door, and it was said to me: "Who is this?" I said: "I am Umar ibn al-Khattab." They had been reading a scripture in their hands, but when they heard my voice, they got up and hid themselves, leaving the scripture behind. When my sister opened the door for me, I said: "O enemy of herself! Have you turned away [from your religion]?" I raised something and struck her head with it. The woman wept and said to me: "O son of al-Khattab! Do whatever you wish to do, for I have indeed embraced Islam." She went and sat on the couch, and there was a scroll in the middle of the doorway. I said: "What is this scroll here?" She said to me: "Leave us alone, O son of al-Khattab! For you do not perform the ritual bath (ghusl) for major impurity nor do you purify yourself, and this [scripture] is not touched except by the purified." I kept persisting until she gave it to me. In it was: "In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful." When I read "the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful," I remembered from where it was derived. Then I reflected within myself and read: {Whatever is in the heavens and earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise} [Al-Hadid: 1] until it reached: {Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors} [Al-Hadid: 7]. He said: I said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The people came out quickly, proclaimed "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), and rejoiced at that. Then they said to me: "Receive glad tidings, O son of al-Khattab! For the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) made a supplication on Monday, saying: 'O Allah, strengthen the religion with the more beloved of these two men to You: Umar ibn al-Khattab or Abu Jahl ibn Hisham.' We hope that the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was for you." I said: "Direct me to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh); where is he?" When they recognized my sincerity, they directed me to him in the house where he was staying. I came and knocked on the door. He asked: "Who is this?" I replied: "Umar ibn al-Khattab." They knew my severity against the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) but did not know of my Islam. None of them dared to open the door for me until the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to them: "Open for him; for if Allah intends good for him, He will guide him." He said: The door was opened for me, and two men took me by the arms until I drew near to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to them: "Release him." So they released me. I sat before him, and he grabbed the gathers of my shirt and then said: "Submit, O son of al-Khattab! O Allah, guide him." I said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah." He said: The Muslims proclaimed "Allahu Akbar" with a shout that was heard in the streets of Mecca. He said: There were seventy of them before that. Whenever a man embraced Islam and the people found out, they would beat him and he would fight back. He said: I went to a man and knocked on his door. He said: "Who is this?" I said: "Umar ibn al-Khattab." He came out to me, and I said to him: "Do you know that I have turned away?" He said: "Have you really done it?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Do not do that," then he entered his house and slammed the door shut against me. He said: I went to another man from Quraysh, called him, and he came out. I said to him: "Do you know that I have turned away?" He said: "Have you really done it?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Do not do that," then he entered his house and slammed the door shut against me. I said: "This is nothing." He said: "So I am not being beaten, and nothing is being said to me." The man said: "Would you like your Islam to be known?" He said: I said: "Yes." He said: "When the people sit in the Hijr, go to so-and-so and say to him privately: 'Are you aware that I have turned away?' For he is the least likely to keep a secret." So I went to him while the people had gathered in the Hijr, and I said to him privately: "Are you aware that I have turned away?" He said: "Have you really?" I said: "Yes." He called out at the top of his voice: "Lo! Umar has turned away!" Those people rushed at me, and they kept beating me and I kept beating them until my maternal uncle arrived. It was said to him: "Umar has turned away." So he stood by the Hijr and called out at the top of his voice: "Lo! I have granted protection to my sister's son, so let no one touch him." He said: They then dispersed from around me. I would see every Muslim being beaten whenever I wished, so I said: "This is nothing. People are being beaten while I am not, and nothing is being said to me." When the people sat in the Hijr, I went to my uncle and said: "Listen, your protection is returned to you." He said: "Do not do that," but I refused. I continued to be beaten and to fight back until Allah made Islam triumphant."

Kur motra ime ma hapi derën, i thashë: 'O armike e vetvetes, a e ke ndërruar fenë?' Thashë: 'Më udhëzoni tek i Dërguari i Allahut (s.a.v.s.), ku është ai?' I Dërguari i Allahut (s.a.v.s.) u tha: 'Lëshojeni.' Tha: Ai tha: 'A e bëre vërtet?' Thashë: 'Po.' Atëherë ai thirri me sa zë kishte: 'Vini re!
