1208 - Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Abu ‘Amir narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Aqil, from ‘Ali ibn Husayn, from Abu Rafi‘, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), who said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) intended to offer a sacrifice, he would buy two fat, horned, black-and-white rams. When he had prayed and delivered the sermon, one of them would be brought to him while he was in his place of prayer, and he would slaughter it, then say: “O Allah, this is on behalf of my entire nation; those who bore witness to Your Oneness and bore witness that I have conveyed the message.” Then the other would be brought, and he would slaughter it and say: “O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.” He would then feed both of them to the poor, and he and his family would eat from them. He (the narrator) said: Thus, we remained for years without anyone from the Banu Hashim offering a sacrifice, as Allah had sufficed them of the liability and the expense through the Messenger of Allah (pbuh).
