712 - Salama bin Shabib narrated to us, [who said] Bistam bin Khalid al-Harrani narrated to us, [who said] Nasr bin Abdullah Abu al-Fath narrated to us, from Thawr bin Yazid, from Khalid bin Ma'dan, from Mu'adh bin Jabal, who said: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "Whoever among you prays during the night, let him be audible in his recitation, for the angels pray along with his prayer and listen to his recitation. The believing Jinn who are in the air and his neighbors who are with him in his dwelling also pray along with his prayer and listen. By his audible recitation, he repels the wicked Jinn and the rebellious devils from his house and from the houses around him. Verily, the house in which the Quran is read has a tent of light over it by which the inhabitants of heaven are guided, just as the brilliant star is used for guidance in the depths of the seas and in the desert lands. When the companion of the Quran dies, that tent is raised, and the angels look from the heaven and no longer see that light. Then the angels receive him from one heaven to another, and the angels pray over his soul among the souls. Then he meets the guardian angels who were with him, and the angels seek forgiveness for him until the day he is resurrected. There is no man who learns the Book of Allah and then prays for an hour of the night, but that the past night enjoins the coming night to awaken him for his hour and to make it light for him. When he dies and his family is preparing his funeral, the Quran comes in a beautiful and handsome form and stands by his head until he is wrapped in his shrouds, then the Quran remains on his chest beneath the shroud. When he is placed in his grave and it is leveled over him, and his companions depart from him, Munkar and Nakir come to him and make him sit up in his grave. Then the Quran comes until it is between him and them. They say to it: 'Move aside so that we may question him.' It says: 'No, by the Lord of the Kaaba! He is my companion and my close friend, and I shall not abandon him under any circumstances. If you have been commanded with something, then proceed with what you were commanded, and leave my place, for I shall not part from him until I enter him into Paradise.' Then the Quran looks at its companion and says: 'I am the Quran which you used to recite loudly and secretly, and which you kept alive. I am your beloved, and whomever I love, Allah loves. There shall be no worry or grief upon you after the questioning of Munkar and Nakir.' Then Munkar and Nakir question him and they ascend, and he remains with the Quran. It says: 'I shall certainly spread for you a soft bed and cover you with a beautiful and handsome covering, because of how you stayed awake during your night and toiled during your day.' He said: Then the Quran ascends to the heaven faster than the blink of an eye and asks Allah for that for him, and He grants it. Then one million of those brought near from the sixth heaven descend with it. The Quran comes and revives him, saying: 'Did you feel lonely? From the moment I left you, I have only been speaking to Allah until I obtained for you a bed, a covering, and a key, and I have brought them to you. So stand up so that the angels may spread them for you.' He said: Then the angels raise him up gently, and his grave is expanded for him the distance of a four-hundred-year journey. A bed is placed for him whose lining is of green silk and whose stuffing is pungent musk. Cushions are placed for him at his feet and head made of Sundus and Istabraq. Two lamps from the light of Paradise are lit at his head and feet, shining until the Day of Resurrection. Then the angels lay him on his right side facing the Qibla. Then jasmine of Paradise is brought, and they ascend from him, and he remains with the Quran. The Quran takes the jasmine and places it fresh upon his nose, and he inhales its scent until he is resurrected. The Quran then returns to his family and informs them every day and night, looking after them as a compassionate father looks after his child with goodness. If any of his children learn the Quran, it gives him glad tidings of that. If his offspring are wicked, it prays for their righteousness and well-being, or as he mentioned."
