Malik informed us, Ibn Shihab informed us, and he was asked about the breastfeeding of an adult? He said: Urwa ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Abu Hudhayfa ibn 'Utba ibn Rabi'a was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and had participated in the Battle of Badr. He had adopted Salim, who was called the ward of Abu Hudhayfa, just as the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) had adopted Zayd ibn Haritha. Abu Hudhayfa married Salim—while he regarded him as his own son—to his niece Fatima bint al-Walid ibn 'Utba ibn Rabi'a, who was among the earliest female emigrants and was at that time one of the most excellent unmarried women of Quraysh. When Allah the Exalted revealed concerning Zayd: "Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah" [Al-Ahzab: 5], everyone who had been adopted was returned to his father, and if his father was not known, he was returned to his patrons. Then Sahla bint Suhayl, the wife of Abu Hudhayfa and a woman from the tribe of Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ay, came to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), according to what has reached us, and said: "We used to consider Salim a son, and he used to enter upon me while I was in my household attire (fudul), and we have only one house; so what is your view regarding his matter?" The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to her, according to what has reached us: "Breastfeed him five times, and he will become prohibited [in marriage] through your milk—or her milk." Consequently, she regarded him as a son through breastfeeding. Aisha adopted this practice for those men she wished to be allowed to enter upon her; she would command Umm Kulthum and the daughters of her brother to breastfeed those she wished to enter her presence. However, the rest of the wives of the Prophet (pbuh) refused to allow anyone to enter upon them through such breastfeeding, and they said to Aisha: "By Allah, we do not see that which the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) commanded Sahla bint Suhayl as anything but a special dispensation (rukhsa) granted by the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) for the breastfeeding of Salim specifically. No one shall enter upon us through this breastfeeding." And upon this was the opinion of the wives of the Prophet (pbuh) regarding the breastfeeding of an adult.
